  Meeka’s Reluctant Mates

Mikayla “Meeka” Martin’s introduction to the shifter world was an attempted murder by her ex. She survived to birth her son and meet her best friend Suzie. When she and Suzie were rescued from the cruelty of Alpha Randall, Meeka is understandably hesitant to get close to any man. Reece and Wade are kind, gentle protectors who call to her in ways that Meeka has never thought possible. She aches to soothe their tortured souls.

Reece Hutchinson and Wade Garner are triad partners who have a secret. The silver poisoning they sustained at the hands of Alpha Randall has ruined their lives. They want to claim Meeka as their mate and Eric as their son. But it doesn’t matter what they want.

Meeka has had enough. She refuses to have her heart broken again. She is not going to allow Reece or Wade to hurt her, her son, or the baby they may have created. Sometimes men can be such idiots.

  Chapter 1

“I’m pregnant,” Meeka whispered, looking down at the positive display on the pregnancy test stick. “Oh, my goodness.”

Reaching down, she slid her hand beneath her pink T-shirt, covered her belly with her left hand, and pressed against her warm skin. How was it possible that she had a baby growing inside of her? Well, she knew how it was possible. That was a stupid question. She knew exactly how she had a baby growing inside of her. She remembered every moment of the few times she had ever been intimate with a man. They had not been very good experiences for her, but she really thought that with time she would relax and be able to enjoy herself.

Ethan Webber was a very handsome man. He was also a very powerful and rich man. She had been working for him for nearly two years and, in that time, she had come to develop a serious crush on the man. He was tall, broad in the shoulders and chest, and sinfully handsome with dark hair and dark eyes.

His eyes sometimes scared her, though. She never saw any warmth in them when he looked at her. Come to think of it, she never saw any warmth in them ever. When he was working, he was more than serious. He was ruthless. He had acquired the reputation of being direct, cold, and uncaring. When he was acquiring property and developing the real estate to build resorts and strip malls, he didn’t much care whose homes he had to buy or what families he had to d
isplace. Meeka had seen the inhabitants of those homes try to stand their ground and refuse to leave, but it always resulted in the homes being bought for less than the original price offered.

Meeka had suspected that Ethan was not an honest person. Her heart went out to the small families that had been displaced by his determination to get what he wanted. Even when he had pursued her for a date, she had refused his requests several times before he brought up that dating him could either help or hurt her career.

“Meeka, hurry up,” her sister Kaley called to her, pounding on the bathroom door just twice. “We’re going to be late for work!”

“I’ll be right out,” Meeka answered, jumping in fright and rubbing her hand against her chest. “You just scared the crap out of me, Kaley.”

“Good thing you’re in the bathroom then,” Kaley snapped back. “Move it, little sister!”

“Geez, you’re a nudge,” Meeka muttered, laughing softly as she thought about her sister.

She and Kaley had practically raised themselves. Their parents were kind, hardworking people who had done their best to care for their little girls, but they often worked long hours just to survive. The girls had to learn at a young age to take care of themselves and the small apartment that the family lived in. She and Kaley had learned to cook, clean, and do laundry in order to help their parents so that they could actually spend some time with them when their mother and father got home from their jobs.

Kaley was older than she was by only two years, but that didn’t prevent her from acting as her mother, or Meeka from doing just as much work as her older sister. They were a team. They did everything together to help their parents and each other. Kaley was the most amazing person. Meeka loved and idolized her big sister completely. How could she not? Kaley was kind, loving, protective, and she had the best sense of humor. It was weird that Kaley didn’t think she was funny. As far as Kaley was concerned, she just spoke her mind and made her observations. That was exactly why everything she said struck Meeka as so funny.

Meeka knew their parents worked menial, low-paying jobs, but she also knew that they loved each other very much. They were kind, caring, affectionate, and they loved her and Kaley to death. Just thinking about them brought tears to her eyes as she thought about what a beautiful family life they had. Their life together was a good one even though it was a difficult one. Meeka prayed that someday she would have the same kind of a life with a partner who loved her as much as her parents loved each other.

Rubbing her belly slowly, she wondered if that was really possible now that she was pregnant. She hadn’t been out with Ethan for nearly one month. In that time, he had barely spoken to her, communicating with her through e-mails or on the phone at work. During those times, he had spoken to her only when it had something to do with the work that she was doing for him.

She knew that he wasn’t interested in her anymore. It should have hurt more than it did, but she was actually relieved. She didn’t like the way he made her feel when they were together. She didn’t feel important. She didn’t feel special. She felt awful, actually. She felt like she was being used, and she now realized that that was exactly what had happened.

Ethan had never been attentive. He hadn’t been gentle when they were physical. She loved the idea of someone cherishing her, but that was not how it had been. Her virgin status had been taken care of by a man who didn’t appreciate or acknowledge the gift that she had given him.

Being a woman who was still a virgin at the age of twenty-eight was not something she had been ashamed of. It was what it was. She hadn’t dated many men, always watching from the outskirts of society as the beautiful women around her paired off and found the men for them. The same hadn’t happened for her.

She had never been very confident in herself as a woman. She was confident in herself as a friend, a sister, a daughter, and a worker, but as a woman, she had zip for confidence. Having Ethan Webber pay attention to her had been a shock to say the least. When he had kissed her, she thought her heart would pound right out of her chest. She had prayed he would stop before she threw up. Yeah, she was a real peach of a sexy woman.

Her first sexual experience with him had been more scary than painful—although she did have pain when he had plunged deep inside of her without much care for her readiness. She had read many books about sex, and she had spoken to her sister and the few friends she had made over the years. They had explained to her that if a man wanted you to enjoy yourself, there was much more to lovemaking than him just sinking his cock inside of you. A truly caring lover would caress and cherish you, making sure that your body was ready and your juices were overflowing to accept them into your body.

Kaley’s comment about that had made her laugh. Kaley was always the one who made her laugh. She was a great sister who cared about her deeply. Meeka loved her sister more than she could ever explain. She was a great person who had been hurt one too many times by men she had thought cared about her, but they didn’t. She wished Kaley would find someone who treated her the way she deserved to be treated. Hell! Meeka wished she would find someone to treat her the way she deserved to be treated.

Meeka knew that Ethan Webber was not that man. She wouldn’t regret the time she had given to him, but she wasn’t going to be an idiot about it either. She would move on and hope that someday, her soul mate would be found. As far as the baby she was carrying, she supposed it would be the right thing to do to inform Ethan about the pregnancy. If he didn’t want to be involved—fine. If he did want to be a part of it, she owed it to their child. It wouldn’t be right for her to prevent Ethan from being a part of their baby’s life.

Whatever Ethan decided, she knew she couldn’t remain at Webber Development any longer. Tossing the pregnancy test into the trash, she pulled the T-shirt she slept in over her head and turned to reach out and start the shower. As she stood under the warm spray she thought through what she was going to say. Which should she do first? Resign or tell him about the baby?

The funny thing was, she had decided to resign long before she had suspected that she might be pregnant. Being his head accountant, she was responsible for his most private financial records, and she had realized that he was profiting from many land acquisitions in the Colorado area. She didn’t really understand what he was trying to do with all that land, but she knew that there were many families being displaced because of those acquisitions, and she didn’t like how that made her feel.

As she scrubbed her long black hair, she made her decision. She would prepare her letter of resignation as soon as she got to work and keep it with her until she felt the time was right. She had a ten o’clock meeting with Ethan. She hoped she would be able to hold it together and not allow her nerves to shake her determination to do what she knew she should do. She would somehow take care of her baby—with or without Ethan Webber’s help.

Meeka opened the large oak door to Ethan’s office and stepped inside. Ethan was sitting behind the huge desk that screamed power. She bit the inside of her cheek as she remembered how Kaley had told her that he needed to have a big desk to compensate for his small dick. She would never tell Kaley, but she was pretty much on target with that statement. Ethan wasn’t very well endowed in that department.

Ethan waved her forward, never hanging up the phone as she walked toward him. He was angry. Meeka was hesitant to sit. She didn’t like being around Ethan when he was angry. He was cruel with his words, and he was intimidating with his size. He was six feet tall and over two hundred and thirty pounds. He was barrel-chested and had a thick neck. He was attractive in a rugged sort of way with black hair that was a bit long for a professional man and unique brown eyes that had a bit of hazel in them. If his eyes hadn’t been so cold and distant when he looked at her, she might have been taken in by him once again, but when he looked at her she only felt uncomfortable. She didn’t really know how she had ever thought herself to be in love with him.

“Sit down, Mikayla,” he demanded, pointing to
the large, leather chair in front of his desk.

It didn’t occur to Meeka to deny his demand. She sat and carefully brushed along the length her black skirt so that it rested perfectly against her legs. Tugging on her jacket, she sighed softly as she felt the frustration of trying to keep it closed over her large breasts.

Growing up as a full-figured girl had been a blessing and a curse. She remembered how she had been teased for being larger than the other girls. She also remembered how boys had made her the recipient of horrible practical jokes. On her sixteenth birthday, she had waited for four hours for one boy to come to her birthday party. He had called her and had asked her to be his girlfriend and had asked if he could come to her party. She had been thrilled and excited, waiting for him throughout her entire party and well after everyone else had left once it was over. He had never showed. When she went to school the next day, he had told her that she was crazy to think that he actually meant what he had said. Who would want her, after all?

Since that day, Meeka pretty much kept to herself. You can’t get hurt if you don’t put yourself out there, right? Well, that’s what Meeka had decided and why she had kept to herself all through high school, college, and during her master’s program. She had been determined to protect her heart, and she had been successful in doing so. Then she met Ethan and his attention made her defensive walls crumble. She gave up her determination to keep herself apart from others and opened herself to the possibility of love.
